Workshop in Computational Science - GRAD 5964

If you would like to receive graduate credit for the workshop, please sign up before January 22 in the following course:
CRN 13173, GRAD 5964, for 2 credits
February 20 - April 10, Tuesdays, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Torgersen 3080

Have you ever wondered how numerical methods and programming techniques can be used to build a computer simulation? Or what new powerful computational tools are being used to revolutionize the manner in which engineering and science are being conducted in the twenty-first century? Or how computer simulations can be used to predict and optimize systems affecting almost all aspects of our lives and work? This spring you will have the opportunity to explore these questions in a graduate course/workshop team-taught by experts in computational science, Dr. James Turner, Dr. Nicholas Polys, and Dr. Cal Ribbens.

The primary goal of the GEDI course/workshop is to introduce students to the computational tools and required skills needed for developing simulation programs for a wide range of real-world applications, using a common set of generic algorithms and software tools. No previous knowledge of numerical methods or programming languages will be assumed. Please join your colleagues from a variety of disciplines in an exploration of innovative technologies for 21st-century graduate students.

Topics covered include:

  • Simulating heat conduction in the continental crust
  • Simulating the impact of an earthquake on sea water
  • Programming with objects in a numerical context
  • Coding a simulator as a class
  • Assigned projects include developing simulators for
    • Transient flow between moving plates
    • Transient channel flow
    • Coupled heat and fluid flow
  • Visualization
    • Examine principles of information visualization and graphic design
    • Use the latest tools available and in use at major universities and national labs
  • Parallel computing
